The symphony will present two concerts, at 8 p.m. Sept. 27 and 2:30 p.m. Sept. 28, at its home venue of the stately California Theatre, 345 S. First St., San Jose. Karen Kamensek, the Chicago-born music director of the Hannover State Theater in Germany, will conduct Respighi’s “Ancient Airs and Dances Suite 2,” “La Peregrina” (the seldom-performed ballet from Verdi’s opera “Don Carlo”) and “Harold in Italy” by Berlioz. “Harold” will feature soloist Patricia Whaley on the viola. Whaley is the symphony’s principal viola, a position she likewise holds for Ballet San Jose and the Modesto Symphony. She is also a member of the Oakland East Bay Symphony.

The “Grant A Wish” initiative will allow up to 4,000 kids and their moms (or a mentor or other special person) to see one of the ballet’s four shows at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts on May 8-10. So far, two anonymous donors have waved their magic wands to the tune of $100,000 — underwriting the tickets for 1,000 kids and their guardians. Millicent Powers, chairwoman of Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley’s board, says she’s excited about the Mother’s Day program’s potential. “We are giving local children and their families — most of whom have never been to a live performance — the gift of art and theater and a special day with mom or a mentor.”.
