“We had tried different formats over the years, like the biggest conga line in the world, which was modestly successful and a lot of fun,” says Dancers’ Group executive director Wayne Hazzard, who has been deeply involved in Bay Area Dance Week since its inception. “It’s almost like a dance parade, with people are bringing their own styles joining in a one dance. The idea is to bring people together in a way that’s celebratory and inclusive.” Dance Week encompasses some 600 demonstrations, classes, workshops and performances in just about every imaginable style. Last year about 24,000 people participated. The festival has continued to expand even in the face of the economic downturn. The festival closes on May 5 at Yerba Buena Gardens with Planetary Dance by Anna Halprin, the matriarch of Bay Area’s experimental performance art scene dating back to the late 1950s. The radically democratic choreographer is an ideal presiding spirit for an event that simply ignores the sometimes jealously guarded boundaries between populist and high art.

But it isn’t to older skaters like me. Now 60, I have been figure skating for the past nine years. I skated in grade school, watching the skaters on center ice in awe, trying to copy what they did. I never perfected my spins and jumps before hanging up my skates back then. But now I try to get on the ice three to four times a week; many of my skating pals of similar age train more often than that. We skate before work, after work on lunch hours, on weekends, whenever we can find time. We train off the ice with weights, Pilates, ballet, ballroom dancing — anything to improve strength and flexibility. We put in long practice hours, travel to competitions, and, yes, even glue sequins to costumes.
