Halfway through the production, a large UFO zip-lined over the happily picnicking crowd at the Volcano Amphitheatre, before landing backstage in a great puff of smoke. Plus, free coffee and Oreos were served at intermission. (If you’re going to a spring or summer production, you’ll want to bring lawn chairs and a picnic — your hotel can pack one for you, or you can pick up tasty fare at the very fun Country Store nearby.). The company does five productions a year at the outdoor amphitheater as well as indoors at the tiny Cobblestone Theater. When we peeked into the Cobblestone a few weeks ago, a prop maker was building giant trees for this fall’s production of “Camping with Henry and Tom,” Mark St. Germain’s award-winning play about an actual 1921 camping trip involving Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and President Warren G. “The waves lap against the shore, churning up a pale yellow froth. Something rotten – a dark lump – is floating a few meters out. Cardell’s first thought is that it cannot possibly be a human being.”. But it is, or was, a human being, so horrifically mutilated that it causes the hardened Cardell to experience a panic attack. The corpse is brought to the attention of Cecil Winge, a young lawyer turned investigator who works with Stockholm’s police chief, Johan Gustaf Norlin. Set during a period of political and social unrest, with rumors of the French Revolution muttered in the alleys, corruption is rampant among the Stockholm police. In the shadows of this chaos, Norlin and Winge, two righteous men, know their days with the force are numbered, especially Winge’s. In the last stages of consumption, with only weeks to live, Winge has nothing to lose by joining forces with Cardell to uncover the identity of the unknown man, whom they name Karl Johan, and his murderer.
