But the surprise of Thursday’s opening was Emmy Raver-Lampman, who replaced the originally scheduled Emma Hunton as Elphaba. Raver-Lampman, listed in the program as the role’s Standby, stepped up with assurance, bringing the beleaguered green girl to life with grace and agility. Her voice doesn’t come across with the laser-beam intensity and brilliant high notes of Idina Menzel, who originated the role. “Defying Gravity,” Elphaba’s big Act I number, sounded a bit underpowered in Raver-Lampman’s performance.

I hope the city works with Caltrain, VTA and other funding entities to secure funds to do a grade separation at this road crossing, known for a rash of high school suicides in recent years. It’s a sad testament of our times that train crossings may be as likely to be the scene of suicides as they are with collisions with vehicular traffic. Making the track at these crossings essentially inaccessible to pedestrians by doing a fly-over, as was just done with multiple intersections in San Bruno, saves lives — whether the death be accidental or intentional.
