One of the first Bay Trail tablets out of the gate is the Toshiba Encore priced at $329. Intel is planning a new chip that targets tablets as low as $100. Those products will run Android, the chip giant says. Future Android tablets with Intel inside will approach two-digit pricing, packing a new -- as yet unannounced -- chip, Intel said Tuesday. Upcoming Atom-based tablets will appear at the $100 price point, Chris Walker, general manager for tablet processors at Intel, told CNET today. Walker was echoing comments made earlier in the day by CEO Brian Krzanich.

Perhaps as early as next week at CES, Microsoft will announce a version of the Zune Marketplace and accompanying client software for mobile phones--perhaps only Windows Mobile, but perhaps some other platforms as well. There's an outside chance that the company will also announce plans to build its own music phone, but not at CES, and only if the third-party approach fails to gain traction against the iPhone and RIM. I don't think the Zune-phone strategy will be tied to Windows Mobile 7, though, as I don't think that platform will come out until 2010.

Recode, which often has accurate information about Apple launch dates and other news, pegged the event to that September date, but didn't give any other information. Other reports have recently speculated that Apple wouldn't introduce its newest smartphones until October, which would be later than its recent strategy. Apple has added a new iPhone every year since former CEO Steve Jobs introduced the smartphone line in 2007. New iPhones have been unveiled in September since 2011. Apple declined to comment.
